What is the POWER OF HER?

Hear that?

We’ve always had it. Each of us is born with it. But for years, it was stifled. Muted. Not welcomed. And so, it bloomed inside every woman—grew and morphed with intensity and insistence until there was nowhere to go but out. And up. That’s when we joined together and cranked the volume to a ten. Declared that listening to us—hearing us—was no longer optional. We turned the boxes that encased us into pedestals to stand on. Turned failed attempts into poems and rejected ideas into art. Transformed our suppression into motivation and our struggle into song, then watched it reverberate far beyond our mouths. And today, you can hear it, louder than ever before. It is the voice of women: acknowledged, emerged and amplified. That sound—a billion voices strong, generations deep, layered in bright, bold harmony—is the chorus of power. A power that is undeniably hers.

Like most things in life, the POWER OF HER initiative and merchandise has taken a village to make it come to life. The idea started years back when former Cincinnati Opera CEO Patty Beggs approached ArtsWave with a seed of idea that later with the help of globally-recognized and local brand design and innovation marketing agency LPK become the POWER OF HER. The gears started to turn, meetings commenced and simultaneously art content of every form possible began to develop. The result was exponential: a year-and-a-half of arts programming; artistic collaborations, premieres and commissions; public speaking evens; learning opportunities; grant opportunities; umbrella marketing; the compilation and publication of a POWEROF HER book; and more. Thank you, arts partners for the creativity, thoughtfulness and care you put into the POWER OF HER. Thank you Kathy Merchant for managing the book project and editing the 120 essays that profiled nearly 200 women through 34 local writers’ thought-provoking and careful storytelling efforts. And when the store idea was created, it was LPK Creative Director Jessica Owen Stevens who stepped forward and offered ideas on merchandise selection along with her talent after-hours to create her vision. Then there was the store itself – with female artists and entrepreneurs Erikka Gray and Dawn Grady – who put their personal touches into creating local items around the theme. Last but not least, the initiative was made possible through the prioritization and generosity put forth by P&G as presenting sponsor, with support from the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee, LPK and various community leaders.
